Fairytale Twist - Rachel Curtis

See your favorite Fairy Tales from a different perspective! Introduce your little learner to classic tales retold by diverse authors and new, cultural twists. Children will hear stories and learn fun facts about the authors and countries their retelling comes from. They will stretch their creative muscles with hands-on activities to match!                                                                    

 

Leaps and Beats - Yoaldri Messina

This program will allow students to explore space, shapes, and movement while working in their coordination through dance dynamics. This energetic class explores everyday situations from a child’s mind. Through guided movement activities, students will create and explore different stories that allow them to grow their imagination while dancing. The class will be dictated in English and Spanish. No prior experience needed.  All levels welcome.                           

 

Creative Movement/Dance - Greta Kelly

Leap, jump, run, kick, roll, twist and even hula into summer!  "Travel to Hawaii" as we make our own hula dance! Put on an imaginary cowboy hat and create a line dance, and do the "swashbuckle slide" with a pirate's "Arrrrrgh!"  Zig zag and sway scarves (or a tissue or piece of string!) like you are painting the air, make jumping shapes like a ninja, and swing like a baseball player up to bat. Get ready to move!                                                                              

 

Crafty Readers - Debbie Reynolds

Storytime crafts also encourage early literacy skills. Each day students will listen to an engaging children’s book, discuss the book and work on a story related craft.                                  

 

The Kid’s Table - Debbie Reynolds

Students will get to chop, mix and roll through delicious recipes each class. Kids will enjoy hands-on activities and will be encouraged to expand their taste buds to discover new snacks!                

 

The Life of an Artist - MaryJo Allegra

Students will develop their understanding of what it means to be an artist and strengthen their own artistic confidence. Each day, they will look at images of art made by current artists as well as artists of the  past. Students will discuss the meaning and style of each artist's work and then create our own art based on our reactions or personal intentions inspired by the artist's approach.
 

STEM Explorers - Denise Trezza

This course is fun, interactive and project based.  Students will cultivate a sense of curiosity about the world we live in and an ability to solve problems as independent thinkers.      

 

Fun Fitness - Scott Friebel

This class will inspire students to move and be healthy! Students will participate in a range of activities from yoga, cardio to sports skill building.

 

Art Studio - Caryn Zinnou

Each creative session will allow students to participate in various art projects ranging from drawing, beading, jewelry making and so much more! Create your own masterpiece!

Course Descriptions

 

Bookmaking & Interpretive Painting - Maryjo Allegra

In this 4 day consecutive art session, students will have the opportunity to explore the art of illustration and bookmaking. We will experiment with oil pastels and watercolors to create interpretive paintings of the earth elements. Students will learn the basics of expressive painting and book binding. Participants will have the opportunity to publish their own accordion book of illustrations

 

Creative Movement/Dance - Greta Kelly

Find an open space in your living room or bedroom, and get ready to move around!   Wake up your body and brain with a Braindance warm-up, then explore moving in one spot versus moving around your space.  Work together to make a group dance, then do it in slow motion or super fast!  Make a "Chance Dance" from movement words pulled out of a hat!  Make shapes on different levels and change them on your own beat.  Be an audience member for the other dancers and tell me what you saw!  When the computer is put away you will have ideas to dance you around your house in many different ways! 

 

Theater Bugs - Karin Muskarella

 An exploration of drama designed to engage and inspire young players to think "outside the box" of traditional acting & drama. Each day students will play fun games & complete inspiring lessons as we explore the possibilities of drama in a digital format. The week will end with a digital compilation of our work which will include each student's individual artistic contributions. 

 

 Mystery Math - Jen D’Andrea

Let’s be detectives and solve a mystery.  Campers will need to practice their math skills and learn some new skills to crack the case!  Campers will use critical thinking and reasoning skills to unlock clues. 

 

Kids on Stage - Yoaldri “ Jojo”  Messina

Course Description: Kids on Stage is an introductory course for students who want to explore the world of theatrical dance through different dance styles. The class will start with a warm-up exercise followed up with a dance routine. Kids will share their creativity through movement, and also they will receive the tools to create combinations and virtually coordinate the dance with others. They will have the opportunity to enhance their rhythm, coordination, musicality, and memorization. The class will be dictated in English and Spanish. No prior experience needed.  All levels welcome. 

 

The Magic Book Club - Jen D’Andrea

Calling all book lovers!  Join us for a week of reading fun!  During this fun week, campers will read, share and connect with friends. Students will read a story and discuss the characters and various themes!

 

 Hands & Hearts - Madeline Nelson

American Sign Language (ASL) is a beautiful visual language. Familiarity with ASL helps us be more inclusive of deaf or hard of hearing individuals-  knowing just a little bit can make all the difference! Discover the basics of ASL through interactive sessions, games, and songs. In this program students will learn: alphabet, colors, clothes, family/people signs, and other conversational ASL skills.

 

 The Write Stuff - Kristy O’Connell

Students will unleash their inner author and spark their own imaginations through engaging instruction in creative writing. Students will come up with story ideas, learn how to "show, not tell,"  plan and write exciting characters with dialogue, figurative language and plot.

The Amazing Math Race - Brie Kraska

On your marks. Get set. Go! Campers will need to work together to solve puzzles and crack codes in order to race to the finish line. Watch out for roadblocks and detours. If you are ready to solve math problems in a fun and creative way, come join us on a math journey.                                                                                                                                                                      

 Virtual Robotics - Clare Nessfield

Students will explore coding a virtual robot using VexCode blocks.  The coding uses graphical blocks, which is quite similar to the Scratch environment.                                                                                                                                                      

Intro to Journalism - Kristy O'Connell

Students will be guided through the fundamentals of Journalism, including ethics and the chain of command in a newsroom (from producers to reporters and anchors,) how to construct a news article, as well as the different platforms through which individuals obtain news .This class will be led by a former News 12 web producer and current freelance journalist.              

Modern Dance - Greta Kelly

Make a space in your room and dance in bare feet or go outside in sneakers and get ready to move!  Modern dance can be anything and anywhere!  After a short stretching and strengthening warm-up, we will practice swinging, balancing, falling and recovering.  We will work together to choreograph a modern dance where one person's dance leads into another person's, making a chain of movements across the virtual dance classroom.  This class is for anyone who likes moving!                                      

Dance Making - Greta Kelly

Come play fun games to create movements!  Take a dance you already know and change the speed or size!  Take someone else's made-up movement and make it jump or move around your space!  Make a list of themed words, then turn them into movement!  Come stretch, pull and poke movement into something new! This class is for anyone who has made or not made a dance before!    

Intro to Film-making  - Daniel Frick

Students will learn about the history of film. Students will shoot a 15 - 30 second scene that conveys emotion on film.  Scene will be viewed and discussed by the class.                                                                                                                              

Intro to Improv - Daniel Frick

Students will discuss the history of Improv. Students will be guided through exercises that will allow them to boost social skills, teamwork, and critical thinking. Students will work toward a 10 minute performance.   

Sketchbook Challenges - Alison Doherty

Artists have kept visual diaries of their ideas and surroundings throughout history. In this online class, students will get structured prompts for exploring, playing, and recording their environment in a sketchbook using basic art supplies and items at hand. The class will cover observational and imaginative drawing techniques, mark making, and pattern generating for creating art at home. Using Zoom as a virtual meeting place, students will share their work, receive feedback, and meet a new group of artists.

Intro to Film-making - Daniel Frick

Students will learn about the history of film. Students will shoot a 15 - 30 second scene that conveys emotion on film.  Scene will be viewed and discussed by the class.

 

History of NYC Art and Architecture - Louisa Garry

Students will explore the art and architecture of NYC in three broad historical time periods. Students will participate in a virtual  tour of the city and all its beautiful museums, parks, and public and private landmarks. Students will learn to recognize architectural features and open their eyes to seeing and interpreting their surroundings in a whole new way. 

 

History of Washington D.C. Art and Architecture - Louisa Garry

Students will explore the art and architecture of the nation's capital in three broad historical time periods. Students will participate in a virtual  tour of  Washington D.C. with a wide-ranging collection of architectural styles and artistic contributions from around the world.  Students will learn to recognize architectural features, understand the significance of neo-classical architecture in Washington D.C. and open their eyes to seeing and interpreting monuments as important statements about America  and its history. 4100 Spanish I (For Rising 9th-11th Grades) 9:30 am - 11:00 am  Monday - Thursday

The purpose of this online course is to lay the groundwork for the study of Spanish so that students can continue with second level of Spanish in the fall. This online course will emphasize all four language skills: aural comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Students from 9th through 11th grades will have the opportunity to explore different topics of Spanish language, such as greetings, family, numbers, dates & time, hobbies, and daily life. The goal is to build a solid foundation so that students who successfully complete the course can continue with the second level of Spanish (either Spanish 2 or Spanish 2A) in September 2020. The course will meet synchronously Monday through Thursday at 1 p.m. for ninety minutes from June 29th to August 17th, 2020. We will offer engaging online cultural videos, exercises, and interactive games to prepare students for weekly assessments and a final exam. This course will be taught by Ms. Ruth Lloves. (1 credit)

 

4019 French I (For Rising 9th-11th Grades)   10:30 am - 12:00 pm  Monday - Thursday

The purpose of this online course is to lay the groundwork for the study of French so that students can continue with French 2 or French 2 Honors in the fall. This online course will emphasize all four language skills: aural comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Students from 9th through 11th grades will have the opportunity to explore different topics of French language, such as greetings, family, numbers, dates & time, hobbies, and daily life. The goal is to build a solid foundation so that students who successfully complete the course can continue with the second level of French in September 2020. The course will meet synchronously Monday through Thursday at 1 p.m. for ninety minutes from June 29th to August 17th, 2020. We will offer engaging online cultural videos, exercises and interactive games to prepare students for weekly assessments and a final exam. This course will be taught by Dr. Polly Duke. (1 credit) 

 

4275 Chinese I (For Rising 9th-11th Grades)   9:30 am - 11:00 am  Monday - Thursday

The purpose of this online course is to lay the groundwork for the study of modern Chinese. This course will introduce Mandarin pronunciation, tones and structures of Chinese characters, as well as provide instruction in all four language skills: aural comprehension, speaking, reading and writing at the elementary level of Chinese. Students from 9th through 11th grades will have the opportunity to explore different topics of Chinese language, such as greetings, family, numbers, dates & time, diets, and daily life. The goal is to build a solid foundation so that students who successfully complete the course can continue with the second level of Chinese in September 2020. The course will meet Monday through Thursday at 1 p.m. for ninety minutes from June 29th to August 17th, 2020. We will offer engaging online cultural videos, exercises and interactive activities to prepare students for weekly assessments and a final exam. This course will be taught by Ms. Jane Dai & Dr. Qing Zhong. (1 credit) 

 

4150 Latin I (For Rising 9th-11th Grades)  10:30 am - 12:00 pm  Monday - Thursday

The purpose of this online course is to lay the groundwork for the study of Latin language. Students who successfully complete the course will be able to enroll in Latin II in September 2020. The course will introduce basic grammatical and syntactical features of Latin (Latin word order, nominative and accusative cases, imperfect and perfect tenses, etc.), many Latin vocabulary words, as well as complex Latin sentences and dramatized stories. Since approximately half of the words in English are derived directly or indirectly from Latin, and since Latin is the basis of  Romance languages, Latin is especially useful for understanding the grammar and vocabulary of English; it also provides an excellent foundation for the study of Spanish, French, Italian, etc. Some attention will be given to etymologies and derivations. Consideration will also be given to the culture of ancient Rome and the stories and character traits of the Olympian gods and goddesses. The course will meet Monday through Thursday at 1 p.m. for ninety minutes from June 29th to August 17th, 2020. We will offer engaging online cultural videos, exercises, and interactive games to prepare students for weekly assessments and a final exam. This course will be taught by Dr. Matt Davison. (1 credit)
