With great sadness, the Friends Academy Camp Office Staff and School Administration decided to cancel physical camp for the summer of 2020. Given the COVID-19 crisis, we felt that we could not ensure the health and safety of our campers, staff, and community, which has always been our top priority. This will be the first time we have not run our camp program in 51 years and we are all heartbroken.
This decision was difficult to make but, we know it is the right thing to do. The State of New York currently has a “pause order” in effect, which includes the closure of all youth camps. Though these guidelines could change, any revisions would come too late for us to prepare for our wonderful summer. In addition, all signs point to the likelihood that if camps are allowed to open, we will have to maintain social distancing, wear masks, eat in shifts in the cafeteria, disinfect classrooms and used spaces daily, and be prepared to close camp if the virus surges again. We do not believe that opening camp under these conditions would be compatible with the Friends Academy Summer Camp experience, and we could not accept the risk to our campers, staff or to our community. Any family that has already enrolled for our Summer Camp Program and wishes to be fully refunded, please contact Carline Folkes at email@example.com
On a brighter note, we are excited to share that we will be offering an online Summer Discovery with Friends Program that will offer innovative and engaging programs ranging from journalism to graphic design and will be taught by Friends Academy faculty and staff. These programs will provide a means for students to socialize, learn something new, or dig deeper into a particular passion. Program details will become available in early June.
We hope that you and your family are able to remain safe and healthy during these times, and we look forward to the day when we all meet again in person.
