Strong Minds. Kind Hearts.

Think. Read. Write. Learn. Help Others.

The Friends Academy English Department is committed to providing students with deep content knowledge and high-level critical thinking. We seek to develop in our students the ability to think clearly, read thoughtfully, communicate effectively, listen intelligently, and understand literature not only as a source of information and enjoyment, but also as a record of human thought and spirit through the ages – as a guide, therefore, to a clear perspective on the conflicting ideas in today’s world.

Our faculty is made up of experienced teachers with advanced degrees who love what they do each day and who are committed to ongoing professional development and growth in order bring the best of new thinking about pedagogy into conversation with those practices that have stood the test of time. In so doing, we hope to model for our students the joys of being a dedicated professional and a life-long learner; to stimulate in our students the desire to find and doggedly pursue passions of their own; and to equip the students with the tools they will need to achieve them in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
- William Butler Yeats
