Longtime basketball coach Steve Hefele returned to the gymnasium for a special dedication of the home bench on Saturday, Dec. 8. Before the start of the Boys Varsity Basketball game against Sewanhaka HS, fans, friends, colleagues and family members gathered to honor the Friends Academy coach of 33 years.
"Today we recognize someone who has made a significant contribution to our basketball program over the past three decades," began Friends Academy Athletic Director Alan Quackenbush.
Over the 33 years Hefele spent as FA's head boys varsity basketball coach, he and his teams compiled over 360 wins, won two MAAPS championships, two PSAA championships, multiple conference championships and appeared in the NYS Championship Tournament three times, capturing the state crown in 2011.
"More important than the wins and losses though was the fact that in the time Steve was at the helm of the basketball program, our teams were always held in the highest regard with respect to sportsmanship and how they conducted themselves both among coaches and officials. He was one of the most respected coaches within Nassau County and his teams were recognized as displaying the highest character and integrity," commented Quackenbush.
In 2017 his team was awarded the James Greene Sportsmanship Award by the LI basketball officials organization. This award is considered the most prestigious award that this organization bestows upon a high school team.
"Steve has touched the lives of over 1,000 student-athletes, not the least of which were his own two sons Harrison and TJ, who graduated in 2009 and 2011 respectively, and who Steve had the pleasure of coaching throughout their high school careers," remarked Quackenbush.
Quackenbush added, "We thought it only fitting that we honor Steve's longtime contributions to our athletic program by recognizing a spot in the gym where he spent many hours and created many positive memories for his players, teams and Friends Academy."
"To this end, going forward, our home bench area will be known and recognized as the "Coach Hefele Home Bench.
