Right Sharing and Right Ordering

A testimony is a statement of our beliefs; it is a goal for our behavior.

The goal of the Green Campus committee is to live up to the Quaker testimony of stewardship.

Two phrases used by Quakers to describe how to lead one’s life are “right sharing” and “right ordering.” Both remind us of our obligation to share the world’s resources and to leave them in the right order or as John Woolman an early Quaker writer wrote we need to have a “right relationship” with the Earth and with others.

In order to make this happen at FA the Friends Academy Green Campus Committee has undertaken a number of initiatives to make Friends Academy a more environmentally sustainable community. The committee is making a serious effort to increase the conservation of resources, reduce the amount of waste produced, and use sustainable landscaping, building design, and building renovation. Another part of the goal is to teach students about our environmental and incorporate environmental and sustainable issues across the curriculum.

The Green Campus plan is already moving forward. In the past year Friends Academy has

a. established a paper recycling program,
b. switched to the use of green cleaning supplies and
c. instituted a native tree policy.

There is still much to be done!

Reduce and Recycle at FA:

Create a plan for less food waste at the cafeteria.

Increase the use of recyclable paper products in the cafeteria.

Begin and sustain a program for recycling cardboard, bottles and cans.

Recycle other materials used on campus such as batteries, computer equipment, and books.

Reduce the amount of paper used and use recycled paper.

Reduce or better yet eliminate the use of pesticides and herbicides.

Our Campus:
Introduce only native flowers, native trees, and native shrubs on our campus.

Gain access to area adjoining the woods and develop plan to develop a plan for managing and caring for Friends Academy Woods.

Energy:
Look for ways to conserve energy by turning off lights, setting optimium room temperatures, and employing other energy conservation tactics.

All new building and construction should be done in a sustainable energy saving manner. Our buildings should be an educational tool that helps our students learn about sustainable living.

Encourage parents to use buses instead of dropping of children as way to save gas. Buses should not be left idling in parking lots.

Education:
Initiate programs for students on sustainable issues.

Monthly suggestions for parents in Among Friends use Health and Wellness programs to provide workshops and information for interested parents

Use an in-service day to bring in guest speakers, hold workshops, plan curriculum, develop ideas etc… to gain support among teachers.

Use the Friends Academy Woods for educational purposes.

Involve our students in decisions related to the environmental issues on campus, especially recycling, reusing, energy economy, and campus flora.

Teach the principles of Intergenerational Equity.

Continually teach all members of our community about the importance of setting aside time and personnel to legislate this Green Campus plan.
