Con Wind Power by Keegan.Calligar ‘06

There are several cons to using wind power for energy. Perhaps the con that most would relate to would be that it would initially cost more money than using traditional sources of energy, like oil (the price to build a new wind turbine is about $1000 per kilowatt installed). New fields would have to be cleared if the wind mills are on land, depleting the environment in those areas. You are also not guaranteed of power, for low winds will not result in generated energy, and the energy cannot be stored. Also, if a “large proportion of a power system’s electricity is wind power, there may be a need for a large ‘spinning reserve’ backup power supply.” Many birds and bats have lost their lives from flying into currently standing wind turbines. Much noise is generated when the wind goes through the rotors. The FFA requires lights to strobe around the wind turbines, including at night. That is not fun for people who live around wind turbines. Finally, wind turbines are ugly.

Summary points:
1. High prices to produce wind turbines
2. They are noisy
3. Energy is not reliable and cannot be stored
4. They’re ugly.
