One reason this “Challenge” is on the webpage is to cut down on the use of paper.
Chemistry Challenge #1 Answers Answers Answers
Instructions: Work with another chemist (i.e. a student at FA) until you both come to consensus with all your answers. Visit the science office to see the correct answers, or wait a few days and the answers will appear in the blanks on this worksheet.
ALL CALCULATIONS AT STP (0.00 degrees C and 760 mm Hg on barometer).
22.4 Liters of carbon monoxide gas (CO) = ...........................................1.00
mol
3.45 grams of calcium chloride (CaCl2) = ...............................................3.12
x 10-2 mol
8.38 x 10-4 mol of strontium hydroxide (Sr(OH)2)
= ...............................0.102
grams
3.30 moles of ozone (O3) = ....................................................................1.99
x 1024 molecules
7.77 x 1045 molecules of ammonia (NH3) = ...........................................2.89
x 1023 Liters
34.5 grams of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas = ............................................2.27
x 104 milliliters
2.29 x 1054 molecules of ethylene oxide (C2H4O)
gas = .........................1.67 x 1029
Kg
One mole of fluorine gas (F2) = ..............................................................38.0
grams
Information for your pleasure: (N.B. The information give below will not be
a part of the calculating contest, but will surely make your mind a splendid
place to visit.)
Match each of the chemicals used in the “Challenge” above with one
of the statements below:
____CO_____ is an odorless gas that is very poisonous
to you and your friends. It displaces O2 molecules on
the human RBC.
____O3_____ is a gas that
filters Solar UV radiation in Earth’s stratosphere, protecting humans
from skin cancer.
____NH3____ is a molecule
that’s very soluble in water. It is mixed into “Windex.” (You
can smell when you clean the windows. But I don’t do windows!)
____C2H4O__
is a gas used to sterilize medical equipment, but it is highly toxic to humans
causing lung and tracheal irritation, and if long term exposure it is carcinogenic.
____F2_____ is a poisonous
pale yellow gas located in Group 17 on the Periodic Table.
____CaCl2__ is produced in
large quantities by Dow Chemical Co. It is used to melt ice on the path in front
of your house, in the winter.
____H2S____ is an awful smelling
gas that is also highly poisonous to humans. It is used in pranks to make “stink
bombs” by people who do not know how poisonous it is.
__Sr(OH)2__ is a solid that
when dissolved in water will increase pH (It’s a base!) and is used to
absorb CO2 gas from the atmosphere.
If you have come this
far,
then your mind is becoming
a splendid place to visit!
All these chemicals can be used to improve the quality of life. However, these
chemicals when not controlled or when not used property become pollutants.
A pollutant is a chemical that harms any form of life, particularly humans and
their pet dogs. That was supposed to make you laugh, at least grin. If it did
not, then realize that pollutants are harmful to all marine life from fish to
oysters, and all terrestrial life including lions, tigers and bears (Oh my!).
