MIDDLE SCHOOL
Steering Committee (Student Government)
Students may become involved as grade level representatives and if interested may then run for Secretary/Treasurer (gr.6), Assistant Clerk (gr.7), or Clerk (gr.8).
TASQUE (Teachers and Students for Quaker Education)
This committee focuses on the spiritual and ethical issues in the school. Students must express interest in joining this club to their advisor or Mrs. Collier. Names of interested students are presented to the faculty for approval.
HOPE (Natural Helpers)
The Natural Helpers Program is a national peer-helping program that serves students in middle school through high school. This is a program for students who want to strengthen their communication and helping skills and to provide support to others and serve their schools and communities. Students learn about this program through an assembly where current HOPE members along with faculty advisors explain the purpose of HOPE and how students are selected. Students who are selected and decide to become a part of the program will receive training during a two day retreat in November.
Diversity
Our school, like our country, is a mosaic of cultures and traditions. The Diversity Club looks to recognize and celebrate our cultural diversity.
Ambassadors
Students who are interested in representing Friends Academy as tour guides and panelists at Open Houses and who would like to host perspective students during the admissions season are encouraged to join the Ambassadors Club.
Model Congress
Motivated, well-informed students work together to present legislation to a “Model Congress” comprised of Friends Academy students and other independent school representatives. This is a great club for students who are interested in learning more about and experiencing the democratic process.
Yearbook
Interested students work closely with the Yearbook advisors to create a yearbook that reflects student like in the middle school. New technology, including digital cameras, has enhanced the creation of the book.
Ski Club
On two Saturdays in the winter, students of all abilities head off to nearby slopes in Massachusetts for a day of fun. Rentals and lessons are offered. Many of the middle school teachers join in as chaperone/skiers.
Outdoor Adventure/Green Campus
Grades 6, 7 and 8
Students will discuss issues such as campus ecology and plan outdoor activities to happen during the school year.
UPPER SCHOOL
Academic Team
This group competes in local academic tournaments.
Aids Awareness
This is an organization dedicated to educating the community about the effect of AIDS on individuals and society, and the ways students can make better decisions to avoid putting themselves at risk of contracting the AIDS virus. It also organizes efforts, throughout the year, to raise money for people victimized by the disease.
Alumni Newsletter
Work with the Alumni Office in developing a newsletter that will keep alums connected to the happenings of the FA community.
Arthritis Research Funding Club
This club is designed to help raise money for arthritis research.
Asian Awareness
This group focuses on the tasks of education the community of various Asian cultures (music, food, etc.) and their holidays. They also raise money for those Asian countries in need of financial support.
Breast Cancer Awareness
This club raises money for Breast Cancer research, and helps raise awareness about breast cancer.
Catapult Club
Members of this club will learn how to build scale model catapults and possibly build a full scale version.
Care Cards
Care Cards makes cards for different holidays or reasons and sends them to various organizations.
Conscientious Objectors' Club
We strive to inform students about Conscientious Objection and the options that we all have when it comes time to register for the draft. It is our goal to show that there are many ways to serve one’s country other than fighting. We hope to convey the message that there are always ways to avoid killing others. No human being deserves to be killed.
Culinary Club
This club would like to cook for needy people in the community. They would also like to develop basic skills in the kitchen that everyone should know while exploring the foods of different cultures.
Cultural Ties
This is a club that raises money for a child in Armenia to help him buy new clothing, food, and a new home. This club will also try to raise awareness of the Armenian culture.
Diversity Committee
This committee provides a forum for students to discuss the cultural differences of individuals of different backgrounds. It enriches the school environment through various assemblies and presentations.
Debate Club
The club debates about current issues involving national and international news.
Democratic Club
We will strive to educate the student body about the democratic ways of government. We also look forward to our big event, the debate with the republican club.
Environmental Club
This club raises awareness of environmental issues regarding recycling and local and global issues. The club aims to help FA become "greener" and come up with solutions to the environmental problems in our community.
ERASE Racism Club
The goal of this club is to aid the ERASE Racism organization by spreading knowledge to the community about racism on Long Island. This club will be actively addressing our community about social injustices and raising funds for this non-profit organization.
The Exhibitionists - Gallery Club
Interested students will work to organize gallery exhibits and discuss ways to promote awareness and use the gallery to it’s fullest extent.
Face to Face/ Faith to Faith
This club is a chapter of the Face to Face, Faith to Faith foundation, which sponsors an annual camp to teach peaceful conflict resolution techniques to teenagers from conflict areas. The club would like to educate the community about the work of this foundation and help to share the techniques of peaceful resolution to the FA community.
Finance and Economics Club
This club is a discussion based club that aims to educate students on all aspects of financial markets. Students will use online resources such as investopedia.com to keep fake trading portfolios and prepare for weekly discussions that will stress topics such as current stock market news, data analysis, chart trends, company valuation and trading strategies.
Forensics Club
This is a club that will learn the scientific skills needed to solve crimes based on limited information from a crime scene. There is a county competition in April in Long Island where teams compete to solve a "mock crime" that this group intends to prepare for.
Free the Children
This club raises money to build schools and give resources and aid to villages in third world countries. Through providing education to children, we hope to give them freedom from their hardships and provide them alternate options for their futures.
French Club
This club promotes the French culture with a main focus in supporting efforts in Senegal and Cambodia. The club plans regular outings to cultural events of interest and restaurants in the New York area.
GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) This is a club to help educate the let the community become aware of the importance of accepting people for whom they are and not their sexual orientation or gender.
Independent Film Club This club will produce several short serious and humorous high quality films over the year to be viewed during assemblies.
JUICE (Jewish Understanding and Inter-cultural Experiences)
This clubs seeks to help the FA community understand the Jewish culture and raise money for local synagogues and relief aid for middle east.
Literary Magazine - GNOSIS
This is the Friends Academy literary journal featuring original poetry, prose and artwork created by students. A committee of student editors selects the entries.
Miracle Club This is a non-profit organization raising money for people/patients with cancer and research for cancer cures.
Mock Trial Prepare to play witness and attorney roles before a judge in Mineola, case developed by the NYS Bar Association. Aimed at educating a mock trial team for statewide competition in February – April mock trial events.
Model U.N. This club is designed to teach students the procedures taken in Model U.N. They participate in an annual competition – this year in NYC. It also teaches students about different countries and about current problems in the world today.
Natural Helpers This is a national organization that allows students to become better listeners for their peers. The group meets 2 times a month and discusses issues prevalent in the community. The students involved are elected into the Natural Helpers due to their innate ability to listen and be trusted by their peers.
Newspaper- INKWELL This is the school newspaper. Interested in writing? Photography? Layout? Any interested student is welcome to join or write for the Inkwell. This year, the paper plans to publish at least eight-ten papers.
Ping Pong Club The goal of this club is to promote and play ping-pong and create school-wide tournaments.
Powderpuff Football This is a flag/touch football club for girls. It will be an opportunity to learn the rules of the game, get exercise, and have fun being competitive. The goal is to organize a game to be played in the spring semester.
Project Sunshine This is an organization with chapters all over the world. This chapter will work closely with LIJ and other local hospitals. We will be putting together and delivering activities for children in the hospitals.
Republican Club Republican club is a political club that tries to represent Republican viewpoints, policies, and ideas. Debate topics will include the war in Iraq, immigration, healthcare, etc. and discussing candidates and their views.
SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) increases the student body’s awareness of the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and other forms of destructive behavior. Some activities the committee arranges include assemblies, discussions with various speakers and specialists, fund-raising, advisory group meetings, and "student responsibility contracts."
Scholarship Foundation This club will focus on raising money to help educate children who have lost a parent who served our country in the Marine Corps.
Ski Club This club will be planning ski trips for interested beginner, intermediate, and advanced skiers and boarders. Trips will take place on Saturdays to areas in NY and VT.
Soccer Club This club will organize various tournaments to raise money for soccer related NPO’s.
Student Organizations of Latinos (SOL)Club The mission of this club is to educate the student body at Friends Academy about the Hispanic (Latino) heritage and culture, while at the same time, actively contributing to different related community service programs.
Students for Sight This club plans to increase understanding and awareness of blindness and vision loss through activities, fundraisers, assemblies and more. We hope to shed some light on these debilitating diseases.
SFB -Student Faculty Board (consists of five elected representatives from each grade and five faculty members) The board represents and articulates concerns about school life, and organizes activities that enhance the quality of school life.
SWAN (Stop Women’s Abuse Now) This group hopes to raise awareness for women’s abuse around the world, especially in countries that are currently ignoring this problem. This group will also do some fundraising as well.
TASQUE (Teachers and Students for Quaker Unity and Education) This group attempts to incorporate Quaker values and philosophies into the Friends Academy community. Throughout the year, it discusses the most effective ways of expressing the importance of Quaker philosophies in school. Meeting for Worship, the monthly query, and the Quaker pageant are part of its responsibilities.
Tuesday’s Children This club helps aid the families that lost a loved one on Sept. 11th. It has also expanded to help the rescue and recovery workers and other children around the world who were affected by terrorism.
Ultimate Frisbee Club The purpose of this club is to organize some Frisbee games and have a good time. Perhaps there can be some tournaments planned.
W.A.T.C.H. (We are the Community Helpers) The WATCH committee encourages and organizes student involvement in the various community service projects. Also, it plans and carries out activities and assemblies in school designed to heighten awareness about reaching out to people in need.
Yearbook "The Lamp" Provides the opportunity for students to organize and publish the yearbook, The Lamp. Full-time staff membership is not a requirement for you to contribute; we need part-timers to help with layout, design, photography, indexing, advertising, and copy. This year’s book is the first edition in full color, so join and have a say in the best Lamp in FA memory!
