Painting with sand - the art of the Mandala
Students, faculty and parents invited to watch visiting Buddhist monk Lama Tenzin build a Tibetan Sand Mandala.
From Monday, January 12- Friday January 16, the Venerable Tenzin Yignyen, a fully ordained Buddhist monk and visiting professor of Tibetan Buddhism at Hobart and Williams Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY will be creating a Tibetan Sand Mandala Painting in the atrium of the Dolan Center.
This week-long process will culminate in a dismantling ceremony on Friday which symbolizes the Buddhist belief in the transitory nature of material life. The mandala is made of colored sand and the construction of the mandala is considered a blessing for the area. For more information about Lama Tenzin and the history and significance of mandalas please visit: http://people.hws.edu/
Please note that during the week, the atrium will be dedicated to this process therefore lunch seating will be suspended in that space for the week. We also ask that you remain quiet in the space and respectful of Lama Tenzin's work.
There will be a Lunch and Learn with Lama Tenzin on Wednesday from 12:30-1:30 in the art studio. In addition, Lama Tenzin welcomes all of us in the community, (all FA parents are welcome) to approach him while he is at work to ask him questions about the process.
