SECOND ANNUAL ALUMNI HOLIDAY LUNCHEON
Thursday, December 20, 2007
Some 150 people enjoyed the fellowship and great food at the Alumni Holiday Luncheon, which now kicks off the December vacation instead of Thanksgiving break. Traditionally held for recent alums, as well as current faculty and seniors, this year's event welcomed alums from as far back as 1996. An atmosphere of casual elegance, with simply designed table centerpieces and a forest of poinsettias, complements the brick-lined buffet, including hand-carved ham and delicious desserts. Once again, Keith Kopeloff and his crew provided a memorable and delectable menu to complement Keith's warm, artistic touch.
ALUMNI BASKETBALL GAME
Saturday, November 24, 2007
Similar to the traditional Turkey Bowl football game that families and friends get together to play around Thanksgiving time, there is a family of sorts that gets together around the same time to participate in a different game.
For the past 10 years or so, alumni of the Friends Academy basketball program assemble in the gym a couple of days after Thanksgiving to see how much game they still have left. Pride and competitiveness are evident from the start as teams are determined by either odd years of graduation vs. even years, or "old school" vs. "new school."
This year’s game pitted the players from the 80s and early 90s vs. the players from the late 90s and 00s. Mutual respect and an extremely competitive contest developed with a special feeling of camaraderie throughout.
It always seems to be a great game, but more importantly the alums get to see old teammates and meet new ones as they compete in a very special game. Coach Steve Hefele, now in his twenty-third year, said, "It is an honor for me to have members of my 'second family' come back and reminisce about the glory days and to see how they are doing with their own families and professions. Thanks to all those who have taken the time to come back over the years and we all hope to see the regular returnees in the future as well as plenty of new faces."
Clayton Siegert '92 has been instrumental as the point guard of organization and motivation of the alums and gets a special shout out.
HOMECOMING/FALL FAIR 2007
Friday, September 28 – Sunday, September 30, 2007
Another glorious day, another fabulous turnout for Homecoming 2007! The Alumni Tent, bigger and more inviting than ever, was a hub of reconnection as more than 200 alumni, representing class years from 1934 to 2007, took part in Friends Academy’s great annual community celebration.
The alumni festivities got underway Friday with the traditional 50th Year Reunion Luncheon at the Jackson House, the campus residence of Head of School Bill Morris. Members of the class of 1957, from as far away as Oregon, thrilled to the once-in-a-lifetime experience. For some, it was the first time they had seen any classmates since graduation. The leisurely luncheon was followed by a campus tour (including the rousing pep rally in the Field House!) and a visit to the FA archives to peruse memorabilia.
The first-ever Saturday Homecoming Reception on campus, following Fall Fair, was a smash hit. (In previous years the all-alum event was held as a dinner-dance at Nassau Country Club.) Almost 150 guests soaked in the salubrious atmosphere, including a variety of pass-around appetizers, in the Jackson House from 5 to 7 p.m. -- many lingering awhile longer. FA junior Ben Aranow provided two hours of live piano music. Several current and former faculty attended.
The newly established Homecoming Reception allowed several "milestone" reunion year classes, including 1957, 1982, 1987, 1992 and 1997, to hold separated gatherings on Friday and Saturday evenings at local restaurants, without conflict with the FA-sponsored event.
The weekend concluded as several alums attended First Day Service at Matinecock Meetinghouse.
The date for Fall Fair/Homecoming 2008 will be announced soon!
ANNUAL NYC REUNION
Monday evening, June 4, 2007
Alumni from 1948 to 2006 broke the record when almost 300 attendees enjoyed warm fellowship, fine food and the architectural splendor of the New York Yacht Club. As in the past, a host of current and former faculty were on hand as well. The event spotlighted outgoing Alumni Association President Jim Greene '74, when Head of School Bill Morris presented him with this year's Distinguished Alumnus Award. Jim has served as Association President for almost ten years, presiding over a revitalized Alumni Board of volunteers dedicated to strengthening the connection between all alums. Jim's terms on the Alumni Board and the Friends Academy Board of Trustees come to an end as his youngest son, Jonathan, graduated this year. Incoming Alumni Association President Peter Stein '79 also acknowledged Past President Bob Darbee '63, whose initiative formed the Alumni Board. Thanks to all who came, and a special thanks to members of the Alumni Board whose input in communicating and organizing the event was invaluable -- and who provided the floating key-chain favors!
5-YEAR REUNION FOR THE CLASS OF 2002
Saturday, June 2, 2007
24 members of the class of 2002 found their way back to campus -- some for the first time since graduation -- to celebrate their special reunion at the Jackson House, the campus home of Head of School Bill Morris. Delectable catering was provided by Alexandra Troy '79, president of Culinary Architects of Greenvale. Several of the class's teachers, still at FA, enjoyed the gathering as well.
WASHINGTON, DC, AREA ALUMNI GATHERING
Saturday, January 27, 2007
Alumni spanning graduation years from 1949 to 2004 enjoyed an evening of fellowship and fine food, courtesy of Bill Young '66, who welcomed the group to the law offices of Hunton & Williams, where he is Partner. Head of School Bill Morris, Development Director Carl Pozzi, Alumni Director Alex Edwards-Bourdrez, and Albert Intreglia from the Development Office were on hand as well.
FIRST ANNUAL ALUMNI HOLIDAY LUNCHEON
Thursday, December 21, 2006
"First Annual" because, for the first time, the event took place on the half-day of school before the December break. The switch from the day before Thanksgiving (there are no longer classes on that day, so school is closed) didn't dampen any enthusiasm. In fact, a record number of young alumni, current seniors and faculty and staff -- more than 200 in all -- enjoyed the fellowship and fabulous buffet in the Dolan Center Commons. Once again, Keith Kopeloff and his crew provided a memorable and delectable menu to complement Keith's warm, artistic touch.
