This is the inaugural issue of the monthly Friends Academy Newsletter for the Alumni Community.
With a compact, lively format, we seek to keep you informed of upcoming events, new items about individuals and activities of interest, opportunities to participate in the life of the school, and more.
We also hope to streamline our communication with you by consolidating messages as much as possible to avoid clogging your in box.

Boys Basketball Plays in NY State Final Four
Coach Steve Hefele led the Quakers to the Final Four in Glens Falls, NY, for the third time in the last four years. Winter track competed in the conference championships, and girls basketball star Lizzy Handy '08 was named to the All Conference, All County, and All State teams. The Upper School staged two ambitious productions, The Larame Project in the fall, and the rock opera Tommy in the winter, as well as the recent 9th Annual Original Works production, a series of short plays written, directed and acted by students.
The Larame Project is a theatrical documentary of the aftermath of the 1998 brutal beating and murder of University of Wyoming student Matthew Shephard. Gay rights activist Romaine Patterson, a friend of Matthew and portrayed in the play, visited FA during the rehearsal period. Click here for more on that, as well as a review of Tommy.
The Dolan Center Art Gallery has offered several provocative shows:
- Voyages and Images: Japan Through the Art Teacher's Eye
- Worx of Fascination and Fancy, The Sculpture of Andrew Smith (brother of FA Middle School teacher Dan Smith)
