WE BELIEVE A Friends Academy education is of the most value to the student who actively participates in many aspects of our program, from the academic curriculum to the experiences of performing arts, athletics, outdoor education and community service. Thus, while Friends students have varying academic and non-academic talents, they share an interest in participating in the life of the school.
We also believe that the diversity of the school community is an essential component of each student’s educational experience. Friends Academy has been co-educational since its founding in 1876 and we seek students from differing socio-economic, ethnic, religious and racial backgrounds in the belief that students learn from each other as well as from teachers in classrooms.
For these reasons, admissions decisions are based on a variety of factors. For the youngest children applying to the Early Childhood Program, we consider results of our developmental screening, a teacher recommendation, if available, and the personal interview. For older students, we consider the school record, a teacher and/or guidance counselor recommendation, standardized test scores, the personal interview, and the visiting day. In general, academic aptitude, good character, and special talent which will contribute to the life of our school are central to admissions decisions. We do give special consideration to members of the Religious Society of Friends, siblings of present and alumni students, and children of alumni.
