THE FORMULA FOR learning and growth at Friends is simple: we bring eager, motivated students together with outstanding teachers in an environment ideally suited to learning, and the result is educational excellence. Learning happens in small classes taught by faculty who care deeply, who know when to push and when to pull back, who want their students to succeed every bit as much as the students themselves do, and who apply considerable expertise to help make that happen. Teachers are guides and mentors for students, helping them to learn by doing, to learn by thinking about things in new ways, and to learn by asking why - a lot. At every step, in every endeavor, our students find challenge, and they find support.
We structure the educational experience at Friends in ways that encourage students to seek excellence. Classes usually have 12 to 14 students, so a teacher can give each the guidance he or she needs to grasp a challenging new concept. This close personal attention builds confidence, inspiring students to set ambitious goals and do the work necessary to achieve them. When something important happens in the world, we don't ignore it because it's not part of the curriculum - it becomes a teachable moment that invigorates learning. Students draw connections between what happens in the classroom and what is going on in the world around them. This adds depth and meaning to their education, and it enriches their lives.
