THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT'S purpose is to develop a student's ability to think clearly, read thoughtfully, listen intelligently, and to write effectively. Our understanding of literature is that it is not only a source of information and enjoyment, but also a record of human thought and spirit through the ages, which can be a guide to a clearer perspective of our selves and of conflicting ideas and ideals of today's world.
