Academic Team
This group competes in local academic tournaments.
Aids Awareness
This is an organization dedicated to educating the community about the effect of AIDS on individuals and society, and the ways students can make better decisions to avoid putting themselves at risk of contracting the AIDS virus. It also organizes efforts, throughout the year, to raise money for people victimized by the disease.
Asian Awareness
This group focuses on the tasks of education the community of various Asian cultures (music, food, etc.) and their holidays. They also raise money for those Asian countries in need of financial support.
Book Club
This club will focus on reading a few good books during the school year and meet to discuss them.
Breast Cancer Awareness
This club raises money for Breast Cancer research, and helps raise awareness about breast cancer.
Care Cards
Care Cards makes cards for different holidays or reasons and sends them to various organizations.
Conscientious Objectors' Club
We will try to inform the students about what conscientious objectors are and inform the students about how to become one if they so desire. We will focus on trying to get students do decide what their positions are on registering for a draft and what they must do now in order to become a conscientious objector.
Cultural Ties
This is a club that raises money for children in India, specifically for a boy named Ajay. The club would like to raise enough money to buy Ajay a home.
Culinary Club
This club would like to cook for needy people in the community. They would also like to develop basic skills in the kitchen that everyone should know while exploring the foods of different cultures.
Diversity Committee
This committee provides a forum for students to discuss the cultural differences of individuals of different backgrounds. It enriches the school environment through various assemblies and presentations.
Democratic Club
We will strive to educate the student body about the democratic ways of government. We also look forward to our big event, the debate with the republican club.
Entrepreneur Club
To invest in young entrepreneurs and learn the basics of the economic market.
Environmental Club
This club raises awareness of environmental issues regarding recycling and local and global issues.
The Exhibitionists - Gallery Club
Interested students will work to organize gallery exhibits and discuss ways to promote awareness and use the gallery to it's fullest extent.
Film Club
This club discusses and produces movies.
Finance and Economics Club
This club aims to educate students on financial markets and help them to understand how to make sound investments by analyzing market trends, chart trends, financial reports, and market indices. Students set up mock accounts and invest play money using the MSN investment toolbox online.
Foosball Club
This club organizes foosball tournaments.
Forensics Club
This is a club that will learn the scientific skills needed to solve crimes based on limited information from a crime scene. There is a county competition in April in Long Island where teams compete to solve a "mock crime" that this group intends to prepare for.
Free the Children
This club raises money to build schools and give resources and aid to villages in third world countries. Through providing education to children, we hope to give them freedom from their hardships and provide them alternate options for their futures.
French Club
This club promotes the French culture with a main focus in supporting efforts in Senegal and Cambodia. The club plans regular outings to cultural events of interest and restaurants in the New York area.
GNOSIS
This is the Friends Academy literary journal featuring original poetry, prose and artwork created by students. A committee of student editors selects the entries.
Breast Cancer and Miracle Club
This club discusses and brings awareness of specific health issues to the community. They coordinate Health Week and bring in speakers specific to health related issues.
Improvisational Theater Club
This club seeks to improve spontaneity in everyday life and theatrical experiences. This group plays games that are featured on the comedy show "Whose Life Is It Anyway?" as well as many others.
Inkwell
This is the school newspaper. Interested in writing? Photography? Layout? Any interested student is welcome to join or write for the Inkwell. This year, the paper plans to publish at least eight-ten papers.
JUICE (Jewish Understanding and Inter-cultural Experiences)
This clubs seeks to help the FA community understand the Jewish culture and raise money for local synagogues and relief aid for middle east.
Junior State of America (JSA)
This is a debate club where students debate about current events and issues going on in the world today.
Man Club
This non-profit club will raise money and give food to local charities. In the spirit of fun, this group will sponsor feasts and raise school spirit.
Medieval Cultural Club
The purpose of this club is to gain a better understanding of medieval times.
Miracle Club
This is a non-profit organization raising money for people/patients with cancer and research for cancer cures.
Mock Trial
Prepare to play witness and attorney roles before a judge in Mineola, case developed by the NYS Bar Association. Aimed at educating a mock trial team for statewide competition in February – April mock trial events.
Model U.N.
This club is designed to teach students the procedures taken in Model U.N. They participate in an annual competition – this year in NYC. It also teaches students about different countries and about current problems in the world today.
Music Club
The music club is similar to a book club. It will explore a different artist, genre, era, style every week. The music will be provided via CD or transferred on Ipods or through First Class.
Music in Schools Today (MuST)
This club will be a fund raising group that will raise money for schools that lack the funding to have music programs.
Natural Helpers
This is a national organization that allows students to become better listeners for their peers. The group meets 2 times a month and discusses issues prevalent in the community. The students involved are elected into the Natural Helpers due to their innate ability to listen and be trusted by their peers.
The Networking Technology Club
This club will encompass the fundamental, mid-level and high-level concepts of data communications in a Local Area Network/Wide Area Network. Club members will participate in the planning and implementation of a secure, live domain. Other topics covered will include: file storage management, backing up and restoring data, group policy administration.
Newspaper
This is a newspaper that focuses on political issues in our world today. It will feature editorials and op-ed pieces by students and teachers.
Republican Club
Republican club is a political club that tries to represent Republican viewpoints, policies, and ideas.
Roof Raisers
The students in this club would like to organize different social events (movie night, dance, fashion show) to raise awareness and money for specific causes.
SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)
Increases the student body’s awareness of the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and other forms of destructive behavior. Some activities the committee arranges include: assemblies, discussions with various speakers and specialists, fund-raising, advisory group meetings, and "student responsibility contracts."
Seeds of Peace
This is a world wide organization that is dedicated to empowering young leaders from regions of conflict with the leadership skills required to advance reconciliation and coexistence.
Ski Club
This club will be planning ski trips for interested beginner, intermediate, and advanced skiers and boarders. Trips will take place on Saturdays to areas in NY and VT.
Smile Train
Millions of children all over the world suffer from clefts, but do not have enough money to receive treatment. The Smile Train charity raises money for skilled American doctors to treat these desperate kids. The doctors also teach the doctors in these countries how to perform the surgery.
Student Organizations of Latinos (SOL) Club
The mission of this club is to educate the student body at Friends Academy about the Hispanic (Latino) heritage and culture, while at the same time, actively contributing to different related community service programs.
SFB (Student Faculty Board)
SFB consists of five elected representatives from each grade and five faculty members. The board represents and articulates concerns about school life, and organizes activities that enhance the quality of school life.
SKI Club
This is a club for students interested in learning how to ski or for those who have experience skiing already. Day trips will be planned for several Saturdays in the winter.
Step Team
This club teaches students how to "step" and put together routines for school performances.
SWAN (Stop Women's Abuse Now)
This group hopes to raise awareness for women’s abuse around the world, especially in countries that are currently ignoring this problem. This group will also do some fundraising as well.
TASQUE (Teachers and Students for Quaker Unity and Education)
This group attempts to incorporate Quaker values and philosophies into the Friends Academy community. Throughout the year, it discusses the most effective ways of expressing the importance of Quaker philosophies in school. Meeting for Worship, the monthly query, and the Quaker pageant are part of its responsibilities.
TECHNI (Together Expanding Cultural Horizons Nationally and Internationally)
We will go on educational trips to the city, to better educate ourselves on other cultures. We will watch and discuss foreign films and go to parades of different cultures.
24 - The Connections to Reality
The club intends to spread political awareness and recognize what our elected officials do in times of serious terrorist threats. The members will watch episodes of 24 and discuss the events and how they apply to current events.
W.A.T.C.H. (We are the Community Helpers)
The WATCH committee encourages and organizes student involvement in the various community service projects. Also, it plans and carries out activities and assemblies in school designed to heighten awareness about reaching out to people in need.
Yearbook
Provides the opportunity for students to organize and publish the yearbook, The Lamp. Full-time staff membership is not a requirement for you to contribute; we need part-timers to help with layout, design, photography, indexing, advertising, and copy. This year’s book is the first edition in full color, so join and have a say in the best Lamp in FA memory!
