During this time of year, I get the opportunity to formally observe classroom instruction. Recently I have seen a fourth grade science class using microscopes at varying degrees to look at fungi. It is nice to see children as observant scientists. I viewed a Kindergarten class full of emergent readers reading a Big Book about a penguin and learning a lot about rhyme. There is nothing better than seeing our younger students so engaged and so wanting to participate in their own learning.
Prior to that visit, I entered the K classroom early on a Friday morning and saw the students harmoniously working at choice activities. They play so well together. Last week I visited a fifth grade class that was investigating the Emancipation Proclamation. What an exciting lesson they were having as they looked at a copy of two primary documents—the original and the final draft. They were asking questions about the document like they were grad students in U. S. History. They made references to the book they are reading in literature about the Civil War. It was favorably impressive. Life is good in the Lower School.
