THE LOWER SCHOOL library is a vital, spacious area centrally located in the Lower School. Its program is an integral part of the school curriculum, and at all grade levels, the librarian works closely with the classroom teachers to provide materials needed for planned units of study. All of the children in the Lower School from Play Group through Fourth Grade have scheduled library classes. Not only do the students learn age-appropriate library skills, but also at each grade level, there are read-aloud sessions. Reading aloud is as enjoyable as it is important, benefiting the listener by encouraging reading, vocabulary development, and listening skills, all while titillating the imagination.
The Fifth Grade TLC (Technology Library Computer) class is team-taught by the librarian and the fifth grade teachers, and is devoted to helping students use technology to access information in addition to using traditional resources. Additionally, the librarian works with Fifth Grade in selecting books for their language arts exploration of genre writing.
Of course, the whole Lower School, teachers and students can always browse the collection for new and exciting reading materials. Special collections in the Lower School library include a growing number of audio books and an Italian language materials collection, all available for circulation. The Lower School Library is a welcoming place where children can always find help and encouragement when seeking answers for any questions they may have.
