FA to host local screening of "Screenagers"

On Wednesday, January 18 at 7:00 pm, Friends Academy, located at 270 Duck Pond Road in Locust Valley, NY, will host a local screening of the film, Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age in the Helen A. Dolan Center Theater.

An award-winning documentary by Dr. Delaney Ruston, the 68-minute film explores Ruston's own personal experiences as a parent and the impact that social media, internet addiction, and video games have on children and family in an attempt to help families minimize harmful effects and find a healthy balance. The screening is free and open to the public.

  • The film will explore a variety of questions, including:
  • How do girls and boys differ in their use of videos games and social media?
  • Are violent video games desensitizing?
  • Does the time kids spend on cell phones affect their social skill development?
  • What do brain studies say about the impact of screen time?
  • Is there such a thing as clinical internet/video game addiction?

According to Dr. Ruston, the average child spends about 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. In Screenagers, Dr. Ruston offers solutions on how parents and teachers can empower and guide kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance in their lives.

Parents are encouraged to bring their children (fourth grade and up). After the hour-long film, Friends Academy will host a panel to discuss the film and its takeaways.
