Technology and the Green Campus Initiative Update

Reduce
  • We have moved to laptops for most applications instead of desktops and CRTs, and replaced CRTs with LCD screens in most locations where desktops or docked laptops are used. Laptops use up to 80% less electricity than desktops with CRTs. LCD screens use over 50% less energy than CRTs. (source: Energy Star Conference 2004)
  • We are working to reduce mailings and classroom paper use by using a wide variety of online tools including the school's website and parent email system, My BackPack, Moodle course management system, Lookout Learning Cosmic, and our FirstClass email system.
  • We have incorporated more copiers that can also serve as network printers. These save electricity by reducing the number of printers needed, and should save paper and toner because they will duplex and print more efficiently. (Energy Star Compliant)
  • We are replacing printers with models that duplex as older printers wear out. Newer models are also more energy efficient. (Energy Star Compliant)
  • We have instructed faculty to turn off classroom projectors and other equipment when not in use to save electricity and bulb life.

    Re-Use
  • We have established a useable life cycle for laptops and desktops to an average of 5 years by cycling equipment into new uses when it can no longer perform originally intended function. This is well above average life cycles in the corporate world.

    Re-Cycle
  • Laptops – for the past two years, laptops that were no longer usable by the school were donated to the Family Service League in Huntington where they were refurbished by local members of SeniorNet and then distributed to underprivileged school children on Long Island. SeniorNet provides adults 50+ access to and education about computer technology and the Internet to enhance their lives and enable them to share their knowledge and wisdom. In the past three years we have donated approximately 150 old laptops to this organization.
  • Desktops, Monitors, Printers, Library, and other A/V equipment that is no longer usable by the school are recycled by Per Scholas. Per Scholas is a non-profit organization in the Bronx committed to providing affordable computers to schools, providing affordable recycling services, and training people for careers in computer repair. Equipment collected by Per Scholas is either repaired to a useful condition or recycled in their EPA approved machinery.
  • Printer Toner, Laser Fax Toner, and Laptop Batteries are returned to their respective manufacturers for recycling when replaced. Areas to Improve and Major

    Issues Still to Resolve
  • Paper Waste and over printing
  • Electrical Use – much of our equipment continues to draw a small amount of current even when shut down.
